Do you need a new roof before solar? An honest answer

Solar panels last decades. If the roof underneath them has a handful of years left, you are looking at removing and reinstalling an entire array to replace what is beneath it -- a cost nobody budgets for at signing and one that can quietly undo the economics of the whole project.

So the honest sequence is: assess the roof first, then design the system. Not the other way around.

Remaining service life is the main thing. Also: the condition of the underlayment, whether there is existing damage or previous repair work, the structural capacity to carry the additional load, and the roof planes themselves -- orientation, pitch and shading determine how much of the roof is genuinely usable.

Tile is worth calling out because it is common across the Southwest and much of California, and it behaves differently from composition shingle. San Diego County in particular has a lot of concrete and clay tile. Tile is durable and often outlasts the underlayment beneath it, which is the part that actually fails. It also takes more care to work on: tiles have to be lifted and reset around mounts, and a crew that treats tile like composition shingle will leave you with breakage and, eventually, leaks. This is worth asking any installer about directly.

It usually makes sense to do it as part of the same project rather than as a separate job months earlier. The crew is already scheduling access, the array layout can be designed around fresh material, and you are not paying twice for the same removal and reinstallation.

It does add cost, and we would rather show you that in the proposal than discover it during install. A quote that stays silent on roof condition is not cheaper -- it has just moved the conversation to a worse moment.

We will not tell you your roof is fine to avoid complicating a sale, and we will not tell you it needs replacing to inflate one. If a system does not make sense for your roof or your budget yet, we would rather say so before you sign than after.

Our workmanship warranty covers installation quality including roof penetrations and weather sealing, which is the part of a solar install most likely to cause a problem years later. That coverage means something precisely because we are not motivated to put an array on a roof that cannot carry it.
